CALCUTTA, Aug. iThe Indian Nationalist leader Gandhi was arrested . again at two o’clock this morning at the .bungalow in Ahmedabad of Mahadeva Desai, who is also in custody. The police at the same time raided Gandhi’s “ashram’’ and arrested 32 inmates who were preparing to leave with Gandhi on a secret mission. Disobedience of the order will mean his re-arrest and .trial under the special law recently enacted. The country throughout Is apathetic to the news of his re-arrest indicating that Gandhi has lost his leadership. WHY ARREST WAS MADE. GOVERNMENT’S STATEMENT. (Ofncial wireless.) The Bombay Government has Issued a statement explaining the reason for Gandhi’s arrest,, quoting his own words as showijig his attitude towards disobedience. The Government maintains there Is no real distinction between mass and individual disobedience and states that Gandhi contemplated that individual disobedience would lead to mass civil disobedience.

The Government anticipated a repetition of the unfortunate result of the past civil disobedience campaign. The Government refused Gandhi’s offer to make over to it his seminary, on the grounds that It is no concern of the Governments as long 'as the taxes are paid. The /taxes already have been callected for this year. Press messages from Calcutta state that the Hindu community is unmoved by Gandhi's arrest and life is proceeding as usual.
