Mr E. Phillips Turner will leave for Wellington this evening to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Forestry League.
Mr. Richard Stewart, the welllcnown J. G. Williamson manager and brother of the late Miss Nellie Stewart, was seriously 111 when the last mail left 'Sydney. •
Messrs J. E. Best, A. J. Brass, T. Fahey, J. Seabroolc (Auckland), S. Harris, J. Robinson, and F. H. Whetlev (Wellington) are at the Hamilton Hotel.
Most Worshipful Brother F. A. Maguire, C.M.G., D. 5.0., V.D., has been installed as Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales of Ancient Free and accepted Masons. —Sydney cable.
Lieutenant de Valsseau J. Lavoie, second-in-command of the French naval sloop Savorgnan de Brazza, who, owing to illness, remained in Auckland when the vessel sailed on June 13 for Saigon, French Indo-China, is making good progress in Auckland Hospital.
The deputy-Mayor of Mount Albert, Auckland, Mr Raymond Ferner, was yesterday nominated as a candidate for the Mayoralty, which office was rendered vacant by the appointment ,of Mr W. F. Stilwell as a Stipendiary Magistrate. The only other candidate so far announced Is Mr G. J. Pickens, the Labour Party’s nominee. He has not yet been nominated.
Mr A. D. Trendall, M.A., of Auckland, went to Trinity College, Cambridge, two years ago, after a brilliant classical career at Otago University. At the 1933 tripos examination he came top in classical archaeology, gaining flrst-closs honours with high distinction, and averaging “well over 90 per cent in his papers.” He has been elected'to the Walston Studentship in archaeology and ,to a senior classical scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge. lie will spend the next two years in research work in Roman archaeological subjects.
