SEARCH FOR MATTERN. EXPEDITION LEAVES. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlg-nt. (Received July 1 10.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 30. The James Mattern rescue expedition took off from the Floyd Bennett field on Friday morning for Alaska. Chief-pilot William Alexander, w'ho is in command said on reaching Nome he and his three companions would divide the map into squares and search systematically. The rescue plane is the craft used by Messrs Panghorn and Herndon in flying round the world.

Mr James Mattern recently left America for a solo flight round the world. He made excellent time, until he reached Siberia, where he met with a few minor mishaps being considerably delayed. After leaving Siberia for Alaska he was not reported and it is surmised that he has been forced down.
