BRIDGE QUESTION.

NORTHERN SITE FAVOURED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. DECISION REACHED. The Hamilton Borough Council, in view of the present condition of the trafflo bridge and the difficulties in the way of financing a more expensive bridge, decided last evening to accept the proposals approved by the conference of local body representatives in September, 1931, for the erection of an all _ reinforced ooncrete bridge comprising three bowstring spans of feet each and two land spans of 25 fe.et each, estimated to cost £21,500 apart from the approach embankments. The cost of the work to be provided by the locial bodies to be''apportioned ap follows: —Hamilton Borough, fourninths, Waikato County four-ninths, "Waipa County, one-ninth; subject to •the work being arranged for without delay. Copies of the borough engineer’s (Mr R. Worley), reports and Messrs Vickerman and Lancaster’s report pn the condition of the present bridge, are to be forwarded to the -\yaipa and Waikato Counties and they are to be advlse'd that in the opinion of the borough council the matter of erecting another bridge Is so urgent that unless Immediate steps are taken to provide one at No. 1, the borough will have to make other arrangements to meet the position. The controlling authority, ,the Waikato County Council, is to be advised that the borough council will be pleased to render every assistance In its power to secure the substantial grant of £1 for £2 up to £BOOO promised by the th.eri Minister of Publlo Works, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, in October, 1930,' and if necessary ‘ will authorise delegates to ,wait with other local body' representatives on the ministers for this purpose.

After several councillors had reiterated their previously published opinions on the subjeot of a central bridge, as opposed to one at No. 1 the deoision as outlined above was carried. Those who voted for the decision were the Mayor, Dr F. D. Pinfold, the deputy-May or, Cr A. J. Denz, and Crs W. B°h r ne> H. D. Caro, F. H. Clapham, H. M. Hammond, Carrick Nisbet and S. V. Tyler, and those against were Crs G. J. W- W. Di 111 car and C. Lafferty.
