TEST CRICKET.

ENGLAND v. SOUTH AFRICA HOME TEAM (MAKES 295. EXCELLENT ENGLISH BOWLING. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received Feb. 17, 11.45 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Feb. 16. The English bowling again dominated the game when the Test match was resumed. Perfect weather prevailed throughout the moYning and for an hour after lunch. The Africans had to struggle grimly for runs. Hammond never bowled better. Turning back disconcertingly, he had the batsmen beaten time and time again, hut did not' have the best of luck. Vlljoen had a most uncomfortable time at Hammond’s hand, taking verysevere punishment from rising balls. Nevertheless he batted grimly, his contribution of 30 runs in 60 minutes being invaluable at a period when time was as important a factor as runs. Hammond bowled a spell of twelve overs, including three maidens, during the morning, and they cost 16 runs. Even the redoubtable Taylor was nailed down by Hammond, and was content to keep up his end and let runs come themselves. The last five wickets fell in an hour after lunch, Peebles striking a patch of good form. Taylor lost his wicket by treading on the wicket in an attempt to pull Peebles to leg. Taylor scored his 72 runs in 205 minutes. He hit six boundaries. Peebles in his last over took three wickets with five balls. The English innings in the afternoon was' twice interrupted, by .rain. The first three wickets fell for 23, but tiie hopes of an English collapse were soon dissipated by an excellent partnership of Hendren and Leyland, who, treating the bowling solely on its merits, scored satisfactorily. Vincent and Nupen both bowled well in patches but were inconsistent. When stumps were drawn for the day the scores stood;— South Africa. First Innings.
