CONVERSION OF CAR.

A SERIOUS OFFENCE. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. When a recent arrival from England, John Charles Hamley Brain, aged 21 years, appeared before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning, for sentence, on a charge of conversion of a motor car, his counsel, Mr H. J. Ferguson, stated that the only excuse he could offer on the young man’s behalf was that this was his first offence, and that ' the whole trouble apparently had arisen from his taking more liquor than he should have taken. It was pointed o.ut by Sergeant J. Harley that inquiries aboht accused showed that he had come to the Dominion in October, and had been on a farm at Walton for three days. Instead of working he had devoted his time to shooting rabbits. “Your case is a little unusual in some features, and I have decided to admit you to probation,” his Worship told accused. One of the reasons for this was that he was a young man, and this was his first failing. He had been only a little, time in this country, and he must learn that interference with motor cars was a serious offence, and one that was rightly treated with severity.

His Worship explained tiiat two special conditions of the probation would be that he should abstain from liquor and that he should not lie found on licensed premises, lie would’ be admitted to probation for two' years.
