WAIKATO CENTENARY.

FIRST SETTLEMENT. A SUGGESTED CELEBRATION. AT PORT WAIKATO CAMP. The centenary of the Waikato will take place on Monday. So far no celebrations for the actual date have been proposed, but Mr. W. H. Paul, the chairman of the Waikato Children’s Camp, proposes to have the occasion fittingly marked when the children are in camp in January.

As the site of the camp is only the matter of about a mile from where Captain Marshall; the first permanent settler in the Waikato, landed, it is .thought that place is eminently suitable for the ceremony.

It is hoped that the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Sailworthy, who has displayed a great interest in the camp, will be present at the hoisting of the flag in memory of Captain Marshall’s landing. The Raglan and Waikato County Councils, the Hamilton and Te Awamutu, and the Tuakau Town Board are to be invited to participate, as all of these are intimately connected with the event.

It is expected that a boat will be run from Tuakau, the nearest railway station, so that all those interested may be enabled to attend.

Mr. Stallworthy has written for particulars of the quickest route to the camp, stating that he is anxious to have a close-up view of the grounds, buildings, and equipment at the earliest convenient date.
