PIRONGIA.
The Farm. Notwithstanding a temporary halt in production due to south-western squalls during the past week. or so, dairymen generally agree that the season promises well, the growth of the pastures being good, due, no doubt, to exceptionally good August and September weather. The herds are reported to be doing well on most farms, and less udder trouble is reported than last year. There has, however, been a noticeable increase in bloating and the loss of quite a number of cows due to this trouble is reported. Abundant Water Struck. In preparing for the coming summer, a young farmer residing on the Frontier Road has met with conspicuous success in boring for water on his father’s farm, using a device of his own invention. A bore w-as put down about 30 feet, with the result that a regular gusher was struck, which spouted w'ater fourteen feet above the ground. It is reported that the young man’s services are in keen demand among his neighboursCow Runs Amok. During a slaughtering operation at the local slaughter house during the week, a beast escaped from her exeoutloner and attempted to return to flier home. Before her recapture she caused a mild sensation at the local school, when she broke into the school grounds pursued by dogs and men. Fortunately, school was in, and no damage, except to the school garden, resulted. Ragwort. An interesting observation of the affects of sodium chlorate on ragwort and grass is being conducted at the local school by Mr Richardson, the school master. Sods have been removed from plots, recently treated with 2i and 3 per cent, solution, containing a fair amount of grass. The process of destruction of the ragwort and recovery of the treated grass is particularly interesting and encouraging. Plots in the school horse paddock have been treated and the cost per acre for the treatment of partially affected and densely affected pasture is being worked out by the master and senior scholar. Local farmers are indebted to Mr Richardson for the thorough manner of his investigation of this important matter. ;
