Anglican Church Bazaar. Despite the inclement weather the bazaar in aid of the Anglican Church ‘funds, held in the Matamata Town ;Hall on Wednesday, was an unqualified success. A steady stream of buyers patronised the various well-laden (Stalls during the afternoon and evening, and the funds will benefit to the extent of approximately £IOO as the result of the day’s work, r The following ladies were in charge of stalls‘.—Produce, Mesdames Hitchcock, Richmond, Downie and Pickup; "children’s, Mesdames Cranswick and Williams and Miss Duxfleld; sweets, 'Mrs Saunders, Misses W. F. and I. Duxfleld, M. and V. Simpson, D. Chilton and E. P'rowse; cake, Mesdames J. Mateer, A. Maleer, Callaghan and Warren; fancy goods, Mesdames Chapman, Halligan, Mason and W. Wright; . plain, Mesdames Alquist, Prowse, j Simpson and Scherer; Flower, Mes- ' dames Brisco and Turner and Miss C.

Rollett; tea rooms, Mesdames Brisco, ‘Carter, Newcome, Wrigley and Watkins, Misses B. and M. Brisco and G. Walker.

Winners of the various competitions were as follows: —Fuji silk trousseau, Mrs T. Bluck; reversible rug, Mrs B. Scherer; coloured supper cloth, Mrs A. East; cakes, Mesdames J. Mateer, J. W. Simpson and F. A. Clarke and Miss Ivy Duxfleld; cushion, Mr J. J. Simpson; fern basket, Mrs J. Beeby; asparagus fern basket,' Mr L. Carter; ibride doll, Miss Una Mateer; {box'* chocolates, Miss .S. Downie; box chocolates, Miss C. Rollett; firescreen, Mrs J. Leask; nail driving, Mr W. Quigg, jnr.; white crochet supper cloth, Mrs R. Hodge; cream baby shawl, Mrs Fletcher; celluloid doll, D. Harray; ladies’ chain stepping, Miss K. Chapman; Aunt Sally, Mr Radford; shooting gallery, Mr E. Parsons. St- John Ambulance. A meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association, Matamata branch, was held on Tuesday evening, the Rev. A. C. Hampton presiding. A report was submitted by Mr W. Quigg jnr., showing that funds were now 'Sufficient to -ensure the necessary uniforms and equipment. The question of the exact distinction and allocation of work as between the brigade and association committees has been exercising the minds of members for some time. The question had been submitted to Mr 11. i D. Cobbe, Hamillop district officer, and:

he replied as follows:—“Members of the association are drawn from the public, and the association is purely honorary. The members of the brigade must have a certificate from the association before they can be enrolled as members. ’ They are definitely under the control of file mem-ber-in-charge of the division or section- The association (takes icharge of propaganda work, arranges the classes and passes the successful candidates on to the brigade for enrolment. The brigade takes charge of the field work, and is governed definitely by regulations. In regard to funds there must be two distinct accounts, and complete harmony should exist between the two sections.”

j Mr Hampton stated that Mr 1 Cobbe’s explanation made the posi- > tion clear. He congratulated the bri- • gade on the quick response to its ■ appeal for funds. 1 Social Evening. An enjoyable evening was spent in ’ the Rialto Rooms on Saturday night when ,the members of Mr H. E. Schofield’s Matamata Musical Society gathered together. Items were rendered ’ by Miss Pederson, Rev. C. W. Turner, Messrs S- Holland and M. Bates. Messrs H. E. Schofield and A. Crabb were the pianists. A pleasant hour or two was spent in dancing. Tfie Weather. Strong winds and heavy rain showers have ruled through a miserable week. Bowling. Five rinks of bowlers will be away from Matamata at tile week-end. Four intend competing at Te Aroha and Mr Peter Stewart is taking a. rink to Te Awamutu on Labour Day. Cricket. The cricketers of Matamata intend opening the season with a practice game to-day. More enthusiasm is being shown this year and there is every prospect of a successful seasonPersonal. Miss W. Bates is spending the holiday at Orini. Mrs J. Price is visiting Rotorua. Miss Sybil Primrose, of Dalmeny, Hamilton, is the guest of TTrs H. E. Schofield, Matamata. Mrs A. Finlayson and Miss K. McGeahan are spending the week-end with Mrs J. Hesketh at Rotorua. Mrs C- Williamson of Takapuna, is i the guest of her sister, Mrs W. Were, Matamata.
