BOROUGH COUNCIL.
NGARUAWAHIA MEETING. The Ngaruawahia Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr II- JSampson ) presiding. Also present were: Crs. Johnston, Paterson, Sauibrey, Eyre, and Payne, and the town clerk (Mr 11. B. Fraser). Domain Matters, As a deputation from the Facing Club Mr A. Sutherland (president) and Mr 11. B. Jones (secretary) waited upon the board in reference to matters pertaining to the racecourse. Mr Sutherland explained that their object was to see if some finality iegarding the course, could be arrived at. The position was still the sam . The lessee’s stock used the course as a roadway and the work already carried out was being undone The saddling paddock had been locked, but the fence was now in a state ot disrepair. Mr Sutherland produced a proposed plan of alterations whereoy there would he two crossings on the course in place of half a dozen. Certain fences would be required to close the course at crossings, but this would allow sufficient length for the working of the horses between crossings. Mr Jones supported the previous speaker’s remarks, and said he considered the club should know what was to be done- , . ~ , ~ n The deputation requested that the necessary alterations should.be dqne by the board. It was estimated that the cost would be in the vicinity ot £2O. Mr Sutherland Was prepared to supervise the work being done on the board s behalf. . During the discussion Mr Jones asked who should be responsible foi the maintenance of the fences separating the course from the Domain and for the clearing of noxious weeds. It was considered that the two bodies concerned were responsible in equa manner. The board then discussed the matter in committee, and decided upon a course of action. Firewood Creek Reserve. On Cr. Payne’s proposal the board accepted the offer of Mr Zimmerman to clear the reserve if granted occupancy for three years free. Streets Maintenance. The Sreets Committee recommended the following programme for the ensuing year—Great South Road: Spread metal chips within borough boundaries, omitting the portion between Keplar and Jesmond Streets, which has already received a dressing, of chip , Waingaro road: Gravel to he spread within borough boundaries; spread gravel on Havelock Street and oivHerschel Street from Ellery Street to Princes Street, and on Princes Street from Great South Road to Gallileo Street; provide about 100 yards grave for general maintenance; tar and sand footpaths on Great South Road between Lambton and Newton Streets Jesmond Street from Gallileo Stree„ to the Esplanade; Keplar Street from Galileo Street to the Esplanade, footpath on old Taupiri road. The Mayor stated that the work planned for footpaths would engage special labour, so that the borough foreman would have more time in which to maintain the by-streets. Cr. Paterson stated that arrangements had been made for the hire of a motor grader to operate periodically upon the main,highways. Cr. Saulbrey referred to the dangerous condition of.the cutting at the entrance to the borough from the Waipa Valley. Visibility was bad and improvements could be expected at, a small cost—lt was resolved to add this to the programme of work. The report was adopted. Tenders for Sand. The Mayor stated that the district engineer had intimated that the work of permanently surfacing the main highways this year was out of the question, and that the borough would require to do more in maintaining the present surface. It was resolved to call tenders for the supply of 1600 yards- of sand from a pit to be specified by the council. . . Miscellaneous. A motion to modify arrangements with the caretaker of the sale-yards was carried. An application was received from Vercoe and Company to hold a. sale within the borough, and permission was granted subject to a fee of £3 being paid. . , , With regard to certain accounts for Fire Brigade affiliations, ,Cr. Paterson was deputed to interview the Brigade Superintendent....... Cr. Eyre said with regard to auctioneers’ fees that there were several firms operating within the borough.— The Town Clerk reported that he had written to the various firms concerned and had up to the present received one reply, that such fee would be credited to the borough.
