DIPHTHERIA CASES.

OUTBREAK. AT POKENO. NINE PERSONS AFFECTED. An outbreak of diphtheria has occurred at ,Pokeno, and nine persons, the majority children, have contracted the . disease. Six cases have been taken to the Auckland Hospital. Officers of the Health Department who have visited Pokeno say that the epidemic commenced at a gathering of children held in the township just before the school holidays. One child who had contracted diphtheria evidently acted as a carrier, because all the patients now suffering from the disease were present at the function. A departmental health inspector is in the district to see that the regulations pertaining to infectious diseases are carried out. So far only two families are affected, and are strictly confined to their homes. Several contacts have been examined, and a close watch is being kept for possible developments. The mother of one of the children has also contracted the disease, and is in the Auckland Hospital.
