MIDNIGHT BLAZE.

BRIGADE’S GOOD SAVE

SHOP PARTLY DESTROYED. HAT BLOCKER CAUSES FIRE. A good “ save ” was effected by the Hamilton Fire Brigade just before midnight last night when fire broke out in the premises known as Glencoe House, ladies’ costumiers, Victoria Street North. The building is occupied by Miss Isabella Turner and owned by the Ridd Milking Machine Company, New Plymouth. The fire originated in the storeroom, the middle of the three rooms comprising the premises, where shelves laden with- valuable soft goods were erected. A metal electric hat-blocker had been left with the current turned on, the heat causing the wooden bench To ignite. When the brigade arrived shortly after the alarm the storeroom was a raging inferno and difficulty was at. first experienced in forcing an entrance. Fortunately the fire was confined to the room where it originated, but a great part of the remainder of the stock was damaged by smoke. The insurance on the stock was not extensive and Miss Turner is a fairly heavy loser. Costumes valued at £2OO and corsets estimated at the same figure were completely destroyed in the storeroom.

Part of the stock of the United Shoe Repairing Company next door was slightly damaged by smoke. It is understood the building is covered by insurance, but details are not available.
