OBITUARY.
MRS ELLEN BIRKETT. ' CAME TO COLONY IN 1841. One of the oldest pioneers of New Zealand, Mrs. Ellen Birkett, who came to New Zealand in 1841, with her parents, died in Wellington last Thursday at the age of 95. After her marriage she lived many years in Taranaki. She is survived by six children, 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grand-children, and three great-great-grandchildren. MRS ANNA MEIKLEJOHN. AUCKLAND, Saturday. The death occurred of Mrs Anna Maria Meiklejohn, aged 88, at Devonport, on Saturday. Born in Parnell in 1841, Mrs Meiklejohn was a daughter of Mr John Goldsworthy, who arrived in New Zealand in 1840. After her marriage in 1862 she and Mr Meiklejohn lived at Big Omaha with the exception of three years spent on the Thames gold-fields. Mr Meiklejohn died 30 years ago. Mrs Meiklejohn is survived by three sons, one daughter, 12 grand-children and three great-grandchildren. MR F. J. McHUGH. For many years prominent in racing circles in New Zealand, Mr Francis Jeremiah McHugh, aged 73, died yesterday- at Onehunga. Mr McHugh was a well-known trainer some years ago, and trained Wairiki,' which won the Auckland Cup in 1903. During the last few years his health had been failing. Mr McHugh is survived by his wife, one daughter and one grand-daughter. MRS. PALMER JONES. WANGANUI, Saturday. The death is announced of Mrs. Palmer Jones, wife of the manager of the Wanganui Herald. principal of Christchurch Girls’ High School. Miss Gibson retired this year.
