THE LIE DIRECT.
AT TRANSPORT BOARD MEETING WITHDRAWAL ORDERED. / AUCKLAND, Friday. At the meeting of the Transport Board last evening a jarring note was introduced by Mr F. S. Morton, who took up a remark by Mr A. J. Entrican, said he would give him “the he direct” and was refused permission by the chairman, Mr J. A. Allum, to proceed with his speech until he had withdrawn the utterance. “I am not going to have anything like that at a meeting of this board” Mr Allum his disagreement with tramway extensions proposals and other policy matters before the board. Mr Morton said the attitude of of the members was in keeping with that of the City Council when It had control of the tramways. “Why, Mr Entrican told me the other day he was here only as the representative of the city,” Mr Morton said“l never said anything of the sort,’' Mr Entrican Interjected. “I give you the lie direct,” Mr Morton replied. , “.That won’t do, you must withdraw that,” several members called. The chairman: Sit down, Mr Morton. I am not going to have anything like that at a meeting of this board. You must withdraw that remark." Mr Morton was proceeding with his speech when the chairman insisted on his withdrawal of the remark. Mr Morton: I will withdraw and will say that Mr Entrican assured me that he was here as the representative of the city. “I have never made such a statement to Mr Morton," said Mr Entrican. “It is quite true that I told him in a private conversation, which he had no right to bring up here at all, that I was a representative of the citizens on the board. That is quite so, just as he represents a portion of the outside local bodies. But because of that, it does not follow that I cannot take a large view of my responsibilities and give everybody a full measure of justice.
