MATAMATA TOWN

MEETING OF BOARD. ROUTINE BUSINESS DEALT WITH. At the fortnightly meeting of the Matamata Town Board. Mr J. W. Buchanan presided and there were also present: Messrs .T. 11. Hawes, I. Black, J. Mclntyre, W. Rulhc, W. .T. Stanley, A. Stewart. C. G. Lucas (town clerk) and A. Ogilvie (foreman). The secretary of the Municipal Association advised that the annual conference would he hold at Wanganui on March 6 next.

The manager of the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company notified that arrangements had been concluded for the sewerage installations required by the Board on the company’s property.

Main Highways. The assistant engineer to the Public Works Department, referring to the Board’s recent conference with the Main Highways Board at Matamata, advised that the latter body had approved of the declaration of Arawa Street ns a main highway from the bank corner to the railway gales. The chairman commented that it was very satisfactory to receive this information, as the Board would receive a subsidy on this work of £2 for £I.

The clerk was instructed to ( write to the Main Highways Board expressing appreciation of the treatment received in connection with main highways. Departmental Thanks. The Commissioner of Crown Lands forwarlled a letter of thanks for the use of the Town Hall, and the assistance of the clerk, on the occasion of a recent land sale of Crown sections at Matamata. ~ Resignation of Foreman. -The foreman, Mr J. Ogilvie, tendered his resignation, requesting that he be relieved of his duties by February 9 next. •

In moving the acceptance of the resignation, the chairman said that he understood Mr Ogilvie was entering into business on his own account. The speaker was sorry to hear that Mr Ogilvie was leaving, and he was sure that members of the Board would agree that Mr Ogilvie had been a

worker,-,end a conscientious servant o\ tli c Board. The clerk was instructed to advertise the vacant position, replies to be to hand by next meeting. Complaints.

The secretary of the Chamber of Commerce drew the Board’s attention to the alleged nuisance caused ;to tradespeople by certain street meet-, ings on the weekly late night.—-The' letter was received, no action being taken. A complaint from Mr J. F. Vospcr regarding the prevalence of ragw'ort in parts of Hie town area was referred back to the writer, as the Board had no jurisdiction in the matter. General. / The clerk was directed to adverlise for applicants for the vacant position of usher aj the Town Hall pictures. The treasurer reported bank balances as follow:—District fund account, fir. £272 15s lid; streets improvement loan account, cr. £1 4s Gd; Sewerage loan account, cr. £ll3 ss; sewerage house con. loan account, dr. £B4 13s 4d.
