MATAMATA HALF-HOLIDAY

CHANGED TO THURSDAY. At the statutory meeting of'the Matamata Town Board to decidefthe weekly half-holiday for the coming period. Mr J. Buchanan presided over a full attendance of commissioners. Two petitions were received on the subject—one with 40 signatures that, the half-holiday he changed to Thursday, and one with 30 signatures asking that no change be made. A letter was also received from three business people asking that their names he deleted from the petition for altering the day. y Five grocers and a furniture dealer also wrote expressing their intention of closing their premises on Saturdays.

After discussion It was unanimously decided on the Chairman’s motion That the statutory half-holiday be Thursday. The Board were guided by the fact that after eliminating a num-ber-of names from each petition, whose trade or calling did not come under the Act concerned, the majority in favour of the alteration was as 14 to 9. . ,
