N.Z. DAIRY PRODUCE,

SELLING IT IN CHINA- . - VISITOR FROM THE EAST. Mr N G. Letton, of Shanghai, nowon a visit to Hamilton, is a member of the Geddes Trading and Dairy Farm Company, agents in Shanghai and North China for the New Zealand CoOperative Dairy Company. Being on furlough in Sydney, Mr Letton took the opportunity to come over an see how the butter he was selling was produced in the Waikato. He has been touring the country and visiting the factories. The farms have impressed him as being “able to produce anything,” and the factories as very progressive. Mr Letton said that trade of all kinds had been depressed in China during the years.of internal strife. Most of the missionaries, under order from their consuls, had left their stations, and business in general had been affected. For many years China had not had even the semblance of a unified Government, but now the Nationalists were at least making an effort to restore order, with a central Government at Nanking. It was difficult to say whether they would succeed, but business people were hoping for better times. The missionaries were gradually drifting back to their stations. Only a few of the Chinese had either the taste'for butter or the means to buy it, said Mr Letton. The trade among them was mostly confined to weathy young people who had been educated abroad. However, there was a large foreign community to be supplied. The butter was kept in cool storage and sold in pats at all the larger ports. W’here it had to travel long distances into the interior it had to be packed in tins.
