.lOLD-UP OF JOCKEYS. TWO MEN ARRESTED. AUCKLAND, Monday. Inquiries in connection with the daring hold-up at Westfield at 1 a.m. on November 27 produced clues which led to North Auckland, and on Friday evening Constable Wolfendale, of Kaikohe, and Constable Duddy, of Rawene, arrested Roy Patrick Newman and McAfee Stoner in the Kaikohe Hotel on a charge of obtaining money by means of a valueless cheque. The men appeared handcuffed in the Wharigarei Police Court on Saturday and were jointly charged that with intent to defraud they obtained from George Roland Walsh, at Auckland on November 27, £5 by representing that a cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, was a valid orderThey were remanded to appear at Auckland, and Detective-Sergeant Doyle and Detective O’Sullivan have interviewed the men in connection with the Westfield hold-up.

The men arrived from Melbourne about a month ago. They hired a motor-car from an Auckland garage, and have travelled a considerable distance in it. Last Tuesday they entered Kaikohe, saying they were touring the North and had just run over the Ninety Mile Beach. ‘

The police had been observing their movements and the opportunity for an interview came when one of the men, it is alleged, passed a valueless cheque. The belongings of the pair were searched, and an automatic pistol and a revolver were found.

The victims of the Westfield holdup were Messrs S. Henderson, L. Manson, E. Manson and G. Holland, and Mrs Henderson. They were returning home from the Te Kuiti races, when two men with firearms held them up and collected their valuables, which however were recovered later.
