ELEVEN COWS KILLED.
FARMER'S HEAVY LOSS. EXPRESS RUKS INTO HEHD. SLIGHT DAMAGE TO RAIL 3. DANNEVIRKE, Monday. The express train from Wellington to Napier on Saturday aftornoon at the Maharahara crossing ran Into a herd of cows belonging to Mr J. G. Doylo, a farmer in the vicinity, eleven boIng killed, An eyewitness remarked that it was/a miracle some of the front carriages were not derailed. The locomotive sustained very little damage, but the rails were slightly twisted. The cows got out of a paddock through a gap In the fence, which was caused by the heavy wind. About 25 out of the 60 animals had crossed the line just as the train came round a bend about 400 yards away. The engine driver blow the whistle twice, which apparently frightened the animals, which were over the crossing and, cowllko, they Immediately stampeded to It. a jamb occurred, and although the train driver applied the emergency brakes, tho engine dashed into tho mob with the abovementionod results.
Mr Doyle estimates his less at between £2OO and £3OO.
