ESCAPEES IN COURT.
plead not guilty. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. AUCKLAND, Friday. Recaptured after their sensational escape from the Auckland prison on May 25, Frank Bailer, aged 26, and John Leslie Buckley, aged 25, stood together in the dock in the Police Court yesterday afternoon. Both pleaded not guilty when charged with escaping from custody. “Do you wish io ask any questions?” asked the Magistrate, Mr W. R. McKean. Bailer: No. But I would like to make a statement. I think it affects the police. I was arrested in Shark Bay on May 30, which is nearly two months ago. This is the first time I have been given a “fair go.” It is the first time 1 have been brought before a Magistrate. I want to know how the police could hold me for two months without bringing me before this Court.
The Magistrate: You were returned to prison on the original warrant. That is why. Chief-Detective Hammond: Wc wanted to bring them both down together on this charge. Each accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
