HEAD-ON COLLISION.
WITH VAN AND TRAM. THREE PEOPLE INJURED. A TERRIBLE IMPACT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, Thursday. As the result of a head-on collision between a milk van and a tram in Hastings Street, Napier, at a late hour to-night, one woman suffered a fractured skull and is in a serious condition, and another woman and a man sustained lesser injuries. The injured are Annie Peterson, aged 18, who sustained a fracture of the skull; Mrs Matilda Hansen, who sustained head injuries, cuts and abrasions, the condition of both being serious; and Eric Peterson, who sustained cuts and abrasions, but whose condition is not serious.
The other occupants were Albert Hansen, husband of the injured lady, and F. W. Coker, who, although considerably shaken, .were able to proceed to their homes.
Hansen is a dairyman of Meeanee, and it is understood that Eric and Annie Peterson are step-children.
It appears that the van was proceeding along the tram lines, and the occupants failed to perceive the approaching tram. The two met with a terrific impact, the noise of which was heard hundreds of yards away. The van was dragged about a chain along the road, and was smashed beyond recognition, while debris and blood were strewn all over the road.
Miss Peterson was discovered lying in a gutter under the verandah of a shop on the corner, having evidently been hurled there by the force of the impact. Mrs Ilansen and Peterson were found on the road 1 neur the mangled van.
