CHARGES OF FRAUD.
AN AUSTRALIAN CRIMINAL. “KEEPING UP lIIS PRESTIGE.” AUCKLAND, Thursday. An Australian criminal, Edward Charles Townsend, aged 31, was before the Police Court on three charges of false pretences involving £SO and stealing an attache case and contents valued at £8 11s Gd. lie pleaded guilty to all charges. The police staled that accused had lived at first-class hotels with a newlymarried bride, and had paid his way with a valueless cheque. Then lie went to Wellington and repeated the offence, being sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment on September 14. He had descried his wife at Rotorua. Townsend said he committed the offences to uphold his prestige. He was now sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each of two charges to be followed by two years’ reformative detention, and sentences to be cumulative, but concurrent with the sentence accused is already serving.
