At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers' Association, the president, Mr Arthur Hose, made some strong comments on the fact that a hotelkeper is not eligible for the office of Justice of (he I'eaee. Mr Lose .-aid that in a law-abiding community such .as they had witli millions invested in a lawful trade and
a trade which was collecting enormous revenue through the customs, it was , t .-lur that they should be debarred from holding such a position as Justice of tho Peace. This would go down to posterity as one of the weakest in any legislation dial bail ever been passed in any country.
