THE TAINUI COMPLAINTS

QUESTION Ifi THE COMMONS. REQUIREMENTS EXCEEDED. (Australian and "N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, June 7. In the House of Commons to-day a member asked would Mr L. C. M. S. Amery, Secretary of State for the Dominions, order an inquiry into the charges with regard to the Tainui which had sailed with migrants to New Zealand on January 8, being unsuitable for that purpose, it being reported that the temporary cabins were ill-ventilated, the bathing and washing facilities inadequate, and no water was supplied in the cabins for four days after leaving England. Sir Burton Chadwiek, Under-Secre-tary for Trade, replied that, the Board of Trade survey before sailing showed that the ventilation, bathing and washing facilities exceeded requirements. None of the officers or stewards received a complaint regarding the lack of water, the supply of which was replenished daily.
