Removal of the pit ponies* fodder from the South Wales mines lias driven thousands of ravenous rats to tho surface. They aro invading tho houses In the vicinity, necessitating a strong guard of terriers at tho pit heads. Tha colliery farrier, accompanied by dogs, descondod into a mine, when swarms of rats furiously attacked him and drove him to tho surface. The owners, fearing the rats will be wild enough to attack the miners when returning lo work, havo organised an extermination campaign.
