NEWSTEAD.
. N.Z. Farmers' Union. The monthly meeting of the Newstead branch was held last Tuesday in the school, Mr Thompson presiding over a fair attendance. The secretary reported there was little likelihood of the auctioneers' reducing the commission on the sale of pigs. The chairman thought they could leave the matter in abeyance at present, pending the result of the new marketing scheme now being brought forward. He suggested the formation of a sub-committee to follow and report to the branch any movement aiTecting the pig industry. This met with the approval of the meeting, and -Messrs W. Baker, H. Moreland and S. S. Fagan were appointed. Ways and means of having the price of manures reduced was discussed. Mr Thomson was of the opinion that if manures were brought under the Board of Trade it might help considerably. A motion to that effect was passed. It was decided to make arrangements to have the meetings held in tlie new hall in future. Dance. An informal dance was held in the new hall last week and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The official opening of the hall will take place on Tuesday afternoon, June 8, when the Minister of Health, Mr J. A. Young, will officiate and a grand concert and dance will be held in the evening.
