DEATH IN GAOL.

THE POLICE INVESTIGATING.

WELLNGTON, Monday.

To-day was a busy day at the gaol. Besides Sergeant Martin, of the Mount Cook police, who is handling the case, many officials interviewed Mr. J. C. Scanlon, the superintendent, concerning the matter. For Just on an hour in the morning a consultation was held between police officials and others, all of whom told a reporter that they could not possibly account for the man’s death under such circumstances.

An inmate was securely fastened at the prison to-day, placed in the same position as Ilayden was on Saturday, and asked to try to free himself. Fight as he would this could not be done, the test only going to make the case more mysterious than before.
