THE NEW COUNCIL

LIMITING SPHERE OF ACTIVITIES.

NEW PRESIDENT'S SUGGESTION

There was a record attendance at the annual meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, last night. Mr H. A. Valder was elected president, and Mr A. E. Manning vice-president, both unopposed. The following council was also elected: —Mgssrs J. ■ S. Anchor, A. M. Risley, T. B. Booth, W. Bourne, F. H. Clapnam. 11. N. Eiby, N. H. Hooker, D. Hay, C. Lambeth, A. Morris, T. L. Miller, J. Murray, P. R. Stewart, D. Seymour, J. E. Tidcl. Mr E. J. Davey was appointed auditor.

In returning thanks for his election, '.Mr Valder paid a tribute to the very high service rendered to the town by Mr A. M. Bisley. the retiring president, who would be a hard man to follow in ofllcc.

The speaker said that it was with a good deal of diffidence that he accepted nomination, as he was quite a novice in the work of the Chamber, while the business which he controlled necessitated his absence from Hamilton frequently. He remarked Hint it seemed to him that the aims of the Chamber had been too comprehensive in the past, and his feelings at present were that the Chamber should confine its efforts to a more limited programme, in the hope of accomplishing more than.by aiming fit 100 much and not accomplishing all. One. of the conditions he imposed in accepting nomination was, he said, that ho should have a good vice-president, and an energetic executive. In the officers appointed that night he thought these conditions bail been fulfilled.

Mr A. E. Manning briefly returned thanks for his election, and said he would do all he could to assist the work of Iho Chamber. In moving a vote of (hanks lo the retiring president, Mr J. Murray said it was due entirely to the diligence of Mr Risley that the Hamilton Chamber had been kept in the forefront of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce during Ihe past (wo years. T.h'' motion was carried amid applause. At a subsequent meeting of the Council' an executive committee was i;ppoinl.ed, consisting of the president, vice-pre.sidenl and Messrs Bisley, Hay, Hooker and Seymour.
