PERSONAL.

Sir James Parr, Minister of Education, was in Hamilton to-day. Rev. C. Mortimer Jones has been elected president of the Cambridge Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr Wilfred Wilson has been appointed Deputy Registrar of Births, Marriages, and Deaths at Hamilton. Mr R. H. Wood, of Hamilton, has returned from Russell. He has greatly, benefited by his holiday. His Lordship Dr. Averill, Bishop ot Auckland, passed through Hamilton to-day on his way to Raglan, where he will open and dedicate the new church to-morrow. Mr J. Sexton, who recently tendered his resignation as huntsman to the Manawatu Hunt, has accepted a similar position with the North Taranaki Hunt. Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P. for Masterton, will again contest that seat in the Reform Party’s interests at the next general election. His Majesty the King has signed the exchequer empowering Mr Will L. Lowrie to act as Consul-General of the United States in New Zealand. Sir Herbert Nicholls, Chief Justice of Tasmania, is' expected to arrive in Auckland on Tuesday by the Moeraki from Sydney. Accompanied by Lady Nicholls. Sir Herbert will spend a holiday in the Dominion. The death occurred at Nelson on Wednesday evening of Mr A. J. Redgrave, an old resident of that city. His son, Rev. F. B. Redgrave, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to Pacific Island mission stations by the mission steamer Southern Cross. Captain George Meager, of Auckland, has been offered by cable an appointment in the air service between Britain and Australia. He was attached to the airship branch during the war, and brought a number of airships from Italy to England. He received British and Italian decorations. Mr Arthur Morton, president of the National Dairy Association of New Zealand, arrived by the s.s. Cortathio (says a London correspondent). He will probably make a stay of about six months, during which time he intends to visit the northern part of Europe, including Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and other Bailie States. His visit is a business one.

Mr F. C. Turner, for the last 12 months superintendent of mails in Christchurch, who has been appointed to a similar position at Auckland, on the eve of his departure for the North was presented by the Chief Postmaster (Mr J. E. Broadfoot) with a case of pipes on behalf of the staff of the Christchurch Post Office.

Professor J. B. Condliffe, who holds the chair of Economics at Canterbury College, has been granted leave of absence from June 9 to August 5, to enable him to attend a Pan-Pacific Conference in Honolulu in July to discuss racial problems. His work wall be carried on at Canterbury College by Messrs W. G. Airey, M.A., and A. G. Gurnsey, M.A.

An old and very highly esteemed resident of Wellington, Mr G. A. Matthews, has just died in the Wellington Hospital at the age of 83 years. For a long period Mr Matthews was caretaker of the Public Library and Museum at Newtown. Prior to going to Wellington from Otago he had a varied career, and in every place he sojourned he made many friends. Mr S. H. Wilson, M.Sc., of the staff of the Hastings Technical School, has been appointed assistant analyst in the Government Laboratory. " The director of the school, in bidding farewell to Mr Wilson, thanked him for the invaluable work he had done in connection with the school. Mr Chas. Colwiil, who, as head prefect, represented the pupils, presented Mr Wilson with a silver cigarette box, adorned with the school badge.
