ORTHODOX CHURCH.
ON LAST LEGS IN RUSSIA
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, November 23.
Th e Times’ Warsaw correspondent says that the Orthodox Church of Russia is on its last legs is the impression gained by Bishop Bury, who conducted the first Anglican service held at Moscow for three years. The Orthodox Church may maintain its precarious existence while Tikhon lives, but will then fall to pieces. The patriarch is broken and tho Soviet is probably awaiting his death in order to deal the Orthodox Church a death blow.
The Bishop visited Tikhon, who is frail and old. He lives under strict surveillance, and is unable to communicate with his brother Bishops. The bulk of the people still adhere to the Orthodox Church, whose services are crowded, whereas t.he Soviet’s churches are almost empty.
