MEAT PACKING INDUSTRY
LEGAL BATTLE IMPENDING.
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.l
WASHINGTON, November 22
Another legal battle is impending between the Big Five meat packers and the United States Government.
The Secretary for Agriculture, Mr Wallace, has attempted, under the provisions of the recent Federal laws governing stockyards, to place Government auditors in the offices of the packing companies, with powers to investigat and publish all facts concerning their business. Mr Wallace claims that the nation is vitally concerned in the packers’ activities, and should be informed thereon.
The Swift, Cudahy and Wilson companies refused access to the auditors, declaring that the auditors’ entry was an invasion of constitutional rights. It is expected that the Armour and Morris Companies will adopt the same procedure, and the case will be fought in the Courts.
