HOME AND FOREIGN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. WASHINGTON, October 4. The fact that there was one divorce to 7.6 marriages in the United States last year is disclosed in the report of the census department. This is, the first report since 191fi, when there was one divorce to 9.3 marriages. There were more divorces and about one-fiftieth fewer marriages per 100,000 of population last year than in 1916. Mr George Harvey, who has been United States Ambassador to Britain since April, 1921, will resign as from January 1 next. NEW YORK, October 4.

The sixth annual conference of the National Association, representing all parts' of the State, carried a resolution of loyalty to. the King and Empire, and condemning' the attitude of persons endeavouring to weaken the relationship between Australia and the Motherland. Mr Wearne. Minister for Lands, outlined the Government's policy on land settlement to the delegates, explaining that the Government had decided to push the railways into the country districts before inviting people to settle out-back. Sir Geo. Fuller has announced that he hoped to be able to state the name of the new Governor early next week. Dr. W. E. Ritter, of the University of California, who is returning from the Science Congress, says the problem of Asiatic immigration, which is confronting American statesmen today, is but an immediate demonstration of what Australia and New Zealand will have to face In future.' He predicts that within a century or two the Pacific will be the centre of civilisation on the globe. Sir Geo. Fuller has communicated with the Imperial authorities requesting that, the immigration agreement under which 6000 immigrants are to be settled in New South Wales within five years be deferred for the time being so that the authorities locally can have land prepared before the arrival of the newcomers.
