BRITAIN'S UNEMPLOYED.

2,000,000 BY CHRISTMAS,

INADEQUATE SCHEMES

Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, October 5. The Labour party and the Trade Union Congress has summoned an emergency meeting for Friday next to consider unemployment as a sequel to the correspondence between Messrs Clynes and Balrow, which was considered unsatisfactory, the Government refusing to summon Parliament earlier.

Mr Arthur Henderson, speaking at Derby, said that there would probably be two million wholly or partially unemployed by Christmas, with possibly three million dependents. The Government's scheme, accordiog to their own figures, would provide work for only about one-seventh of the unemployed.' The country was confronted with an appalling situation, both urgent and dangerous.
