HEALTH WEEK.
AN EMBARRASSED MAYOR. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. ' Mr R. A. Wright, the member for Wellington Suburbs in the House of Representatives and Mayor of the capital city, was obviously a little embarrassed at the ceremony in connection with the opening of Wellington's "Health Week." He wanted to say, as in duty bound, everything that was likely to stimulate the citizens towards an enthusiastic effort to vclean up their streets, their public places and their back-yards; but he desired at the same time to say nothing which could convey to outsiders the impression that Wellington was not the cleanest 'City in the world. Although he could not conceal his embarrassment he really performed his task very adroitly. Wellington, he said, was as clean as any other city, and it had a body of capable inspectors to see that it was kept clean. But the promoters of the campaign that was being initiated wanted to see the citizens looking after their own health and the health of their neighbours. The slogan of the week was to be fresh air, exercise, diet and personal cleanliness. AH this, of course, was very admirable in its way; but as a matter of plain fact Wellington is not nearly so well cared for in health respects as it many another city in the Dominion. Its winds and its rains have prevented it from being found out.
