AMERICAN COTTON CROP.
A PARTIAL FAILURE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. NEW YORK, October . The Journal of Commerce, America's leading commercial newspaper, basing its estimates on the reports of 1600 special correspondents in the American cotton growing districts, states that the crop percentage this year will probably be only 49 per cent., being the lowest in the past 10 years. This percentage, on the basis of the officio!! acreage figures, indicates that 10,950,000 bales might be produced in the event of reasonably favourable weather conditions being encountered during the remainder of the season. Estimates of a more optimistic nature, place the yield at 11,400,000 bales.
The present season has been lamentably unfavourable, picking being delayed by persistent rains, and boll rot being considerable, due to excessive moisture. Weevil activity continues unabated. The top crop is almost a failure, and pickers arc scarce. Good weather is urgently needed to save the remainder of the crop.
