BOOTLEGGING IN AMERICA
GREAT SYSTEM DISCOVERED. i CLEVER WOMAN'S FEAT. CONVOYS OF STEAMERS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. NEW YORK, August 19. Mrs. Mabel Willebrandt, assistant to the Attorney-General in charge of prohibition prosecutions, has brought to justice the biggest bootlegging ring in the United States after two years' effort. A total of 84 arrests was "made at the port of Savannah, which has broken a group which employed fleets operating between the Bahamas and Georgia. The bootlegging organisation maintained convoy systems and intelligence services, which enabled them to smuggle millions of dollars worth of liquor into the country. So skilfully conducted was the ring that the Department of Justice repeatedly failed in its investigations. Mrs. Willebrandt, however, continued her work until evidence was finally secured.
