DEATH-ROLL OF 500 FEARED
WONDERFUL LIFE SAVING.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. HONGKONG, August 19.
The death-roll of the typhoon on Saturday is tentatively estimated at 500. The typhoon was the worst since 1905, the wind attaining a velocity of 130 miles an hour. During the worst two hours nearly Sin of rain fell. Squalls uprooted trees, snapped telegraph and telephone wires, and unroofed houses. The typhoon furnished a terrifying spectacle. Mountainous seas swept the harbour and washed over the seawalls, flooding the lower streets, and heaving variegated wreckage ashore. The Japanese steamer, Sinye Maru, provided the stage for a wonderful deed of life-saving. A British marine, named Twitegers, boarded her and was lowered from her bow with a lifeline attached. He swam through a raging sea 500 ft and saved Lieutenant Wickson, commanding the submarine L 9, which had sunk under him.
