"A NIGHT BAR?"

NEWS TO HIS HONOUR.

CHIEF JUSTICE SURPRISED

"This is news to me," declared the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), in the Supreme Court, Wellington, when it was stated that the prisoner, an employee, had obtained drink from the night bar in a city hotel—"On Sunday night too. I am surprised to hear this. It is certainly news to me!" Counsel stated that the bar was for the convenience of guests, and alluded to the fact that the accused was an employee of the hotel. "He is not a guest," was the Chief Justice's rejoinder. His Honor added that he was certainly not aware that a night bar was permissible even for guests on Sunday evenings. It wis a matter that might be inuulred into. "It is os.tdinly news to me,'' reiterated Sir Robert Stout.

The prisoner was later questioned at some length by His Honour as to whom he had drinks with. "What were their names?" he asked, pen in hand. The prisoner's memory was excordingly faulty. "You could hardly know the names of the guests," suggested his counsel, after a pause, and the accused agreed that this was undoubtedly so.
