DOMINION NEWS

STRIKE AT GISBORNE. By Telegraph.— Association. GISBORNE, Saturday. The watersiders demanded that the Gisborne Sheep Farmers' Company's permanent lightermen should join the union. The lightermen refused, thereupon the watersiders intimated that they would not work with the former. The disputes committee's meeting was abortive. The employers have communicated with the national disputes committee, and the latter have replied that two members are coming to Gisborne to assist in the settlement. Only ships using the sheepfarmers' lighters are affected. Meantime the watersiders have been instructed to work the lighters, but none offered this morning. Later. The Arahura, which returned from Napier this afternoon, was not worked, and over-carried practically the whole of her cargo.
