HOWDEN CUP CONTEST. The first, of a series of inter-club matches for the Howden Polo Cup was played on the Hamilton polo ground on Saturday last. The contesting teams are known respectively as A. B and C, and comprise the following players:A. —J. E. Chitty, A. L. Yule, W. H. Hume, and W. I. Taylor. B. —C. Peake, B. Atchison, L. Swarbrick, and W. G. Pountney. C.—R. Nelson, S. Pilkington, W. Ranstead, ami G. Ranstead. To the "B" team the "A's" conceded three goals, and to the "C's" eight goals, "B" team also allowing the "C" team five goals. On Saturday three spells were played between "A" and "B" teams, four between "A" and "C" and two between "B" and "C." Play was fairly fast, the "A" learn showing superiority throughout. Tiic "A's" scored six goals to -B's" nil, and seven to "C's" nil. The "B" team put up seven points against the "C" team's one. Tiic positions thus are: "A's" 6, "B's" 3: "A's" 7. "C's" 8; "B's" 3. "C's" 6 . The "B" and "C" matches will be concluded on Saturday, 12th inst, and the "A" and "B" and "A" and "C" matches on the 19th lust.
