TAMAHERE-HAMILTON MARATHON. RESULTS IN CLOSE FINISH. It is not often that such a race as the Marathon from Tamahere to tiie Steele Park gates, a distance of some four and three-quarter miles, results in such a close finish as occurred on Saturday. The event, which was held under the auspices of the Hamtilton Amateur Athletic Club, excited a good deal oi public interest, there being a large crowd at both the starting and finishing points. There were fifteen starters, who toed tiic mark under a sealed handicap as follows :—• J. Dougherty 40sec, F. Jones 40sec, L \V W. Brown GOsec, R. Smith 2 ssec, W. Taylor 25sec, T. Patton GOsee., G. The distance \v d .. f«m the store at Tamahere to the Steele Park gates. The competitors lined up at 3.25 p.m., and two minutes later were despatched. The roads were in good condition, and the weather ideal, for such a purpose. It may have been this which was responsible for such a close finish. The competitors hung together most of the way, and a stirring final struggle saw Prosser a yard ahead of Peebles, who was half a dozen yards in front of 0. Jones. As a result of the handicap the race resulted in a win for Peebles, with 0. Jones 2nd. and Prosser 3rd. Mr J. B. Scott acted as starter, Messrs W. Burch and A. B. Cassidy as timekeepers, Mr B. Patcrson as press steward, and Messrs C. Trigg, Syd. Ellis and B. Rule as judges. Under the circumstances the time registered (27min. iOsec.) w;is exceptionally good.
