Received February 4, 9,15 a.m. AMSTERDAM, February 3.’ The German Minister for Homd Affairs, addressing the Majority Socialists at Cologne, declared that the economic and financial demands of the : Allies meant the economic strangulai tlon of Germany. “We should not | decline them all in a mad fit,” he said, “but try to convince the Allies that we are doing what we can.” MR. VV. HUGHES’ VIEWS. TOO LITTLE ASKED. AT (United Press Association.) MELBOURNE, IVbruary 4. Mr Hughes, ..referring to the Allies’ demands, says that Germany complained similarly tiiat she was unable to pay when the amount was fixed at £5,000,--000,000. The only fault was that Germany was asked to pay too little. . THE DOMINIONS’ SHARES. NOT YET APPOINTED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received February 4, 9.30 a.m. LONDON, February 3. Mr Milieu stales that Britain’s share of the indemnity includes the Dominions’ shares, but the latter’s proportions have not been determined, lie flunks that the reported Canadian indemnity must include-the British payments for Canadian services rendered. The Temps, insisting on firm measures with Germany, suggests that the Allies should immediately take possession of the German ■ customs in the respective zones on the left bank of the P.iiine and establish customs cordons separating the occupied from the unoccupied territories. The paper adds, ‘ Germany proposes to talk; we propose to act.” . .
