DISASTERS AT SEA
SHIP LOST ON THE GOODWINS
ONLY ONE SURVIVOR. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received Jan. 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, December 31. The rescue of a man from a small bo it on the Goodwin Sands apparently solves the mystery of Christmas night, when rockels were seen and the Deal lifeboatmen were out all night without finding any trace of the vessel which called for help. The survivor is the engineer of the steamer Great-Clive. He states that the vessel was stranded on the sands in terrible weather, and began to break up. He entered a small boat with the captain, but remembers little owing to his sufferings. He does not know the fate of the captain or the remainder of the crew of 32. ST. JOHN (N.F.), December 31. Three men have been rescued, half dead, from the Dutch steamer Anton van Driel, which was wrecked off Cape Race on Monday. They were the only survivors of a crew of 29.
