CAMBRIDGE BRIDGE

PROPOSED FOOTWAY. CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES. PLANS APPROVED. A conference of representatives of several local bodies was held in Cambridge on Monday. The following were present: Messrs E. .1. Wilkinson (Mayor), Councillors H. Dallamorc and H. A. Gascoyne (Cambridge Borough Council), Mr R. Fisher (Waipa County Council), G. H. Ollard (Leamington Town Board), R. KuTkby and H. Lewis (Matamala County Council.) Pukckura Hoad Board, Roto-o-rangi Road Board ami Waikato were not represented. The Mayor (Mr E. J. Wilkinson) presided. . The chairman said a great mistake had been made when building the high level bridge ‘in that no provision had been made for a footway, and with the rapid growth of the district, traffic had so increased on the bridge as to render It unsafe for pedestrians. The Leamington Town Board had written the Council on the matter, and recognising, their responsibility as the controlling body the Cambridge Borough Council 1 had written the builders of the bridge on the subject, and later the PublicWorks Department, and plans had been received from the Chief Engineer of that department for a footway on either side of the bridge, the estimated cost of which was £IOOO-,. exclusive of the approaches. Upon receipt of those plans the contributing local bodies had been written to and asked to appoint delegates to attend this conference. He paid that the contributing local bodies were all under a responsibility to* protect the traffic, and remarked that if a fatal accident occured there would be such an outcry that they would not be able to erect a footway fast enough.

The delegates agreed that a footway was a necessity, and formally decided that the plans as submitted be adopted. Considerable discussion took place regarding the allocations of the various contributing bodies-. A basis of assessment was agreed upon, and each local body interested will be circularised, submitting the assessments as suggested, and if all agree to accept them the work will be put in hand forthwith, and the expense of a Commission will not be necessary.
