| ACTIVITY ON ARCHANGEL FRONT. ' THE ESTHONIAN CAMPAIGN. NO ADVANCE ON PETROGRAD. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) • Received Ft'J). 2, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 30. The Australian Press Agency understands there is considerable activity on the Archangel front, where 2000 of the enemy attacked the Ironsides troops around Shonkursk and the Taenia River. Wo withdrew a short distance witli small loss after inflicting heavy casualties. .Many of the enemy were draped in white sheets and the Bolshevik leaders have shown more skill and military knowledge than hitherto. The Esthonians are not showing a desire to advance towards Petrogracl, but are holding a short, convenient line between Lake Peipus and the sea.
LATER ' ALLIES FORCED BACK. BY STRONG BOLSHEVIK ATTACKS. Received Feb 3, 12.25 p.m. (Australian, N.Z. and Router.) LONDON, Fel). 1. A British North Russian communique 'states that strong Bolshevik attacks at Tarasevo compelled the Allies to retire 20 miles northward. The Bolsheviks have commenced gas shelling, but the Allies are completely equipped with anti-gas helmets.
