MELBOURNE LABOUR TROUBLES.
♦ THL HUILDING TRADE DISPUTE. A GENERAL STRIKE. MELBOURNE, November 1. The strike in the building trade practically commenced hist night, at knoeking-off time. The Vigilance Committee notified the employers that the men would start work in the morning at eight instead of at half-past seven. They will present themselves and leave to the employers the duty of informing them if their services arc not required. The evidence indicates that the strike will be almost general amongst the bricklayers and labourers n the city. Most of the union carpenters also leave work. According to ihe Trades Hall estimate sixteen hundred carpenters, eight hundred brick hirers, and four hundred labourers will be affected, without counting such non-unionists as throw in their lot with the strikers.
