An inquest was held at Te Maata, Frasertown, Hawses Bay, on the body of Waata II liroa. The evidence showed that the deceased (onsidered tbat he had been " makutu'd " (bewitched) by the natives. Rua, the alleged prophet, had denounced him as the cause of recent calamities to the Maoris, and this had preyed on his mind. A verdict was returned that the deceased shot himself whilst of unsound mind.

The Otago Daily Times asserts that an Otago member of the Millers' Association was suspected of violating the agreement to make all sales through the Association. As a result of special meetings in Christchurch and Dunedia, this miller reluctantly confessed to slight breaches of the agreement, but the proof in the hands of the directorate showed considerable breaches. The offender was then given the alternative of an exhaustive public inquiry or paying the forfeit, amounting to several hundreds Qf pounds. The incident was closed by the forfeit being paid. The Rev. G. H. Mann, who is conduoting the special mission in the Primitive Methodist Church, last night delivered an address on " The Secret of Rest," which was listened to with great interest, one of the best services of the mission beine the result. Taking the well-known text, "Come Unto Me all Ye that Labour, etc," the preacher dwelt on the restless spirit of the age, and pointed to some of the ciuses, also to the only true remedy as presented in Jesus' teaching. The last of the week night meetings will be held this evening, when Mr Mann's subjeot will be "The Transfigured Life." A special thank offering will be taken to defray the expenses of the mission. It has been decided to close the mission here next Sunday so that Mr Mann may conduct a short mission at Cambridge. It is remarkable what large sums are spent nowadays in advertising.
