The Waikato Times, THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE, AND KAWHIA ADVOCATE. Established Thirty-Four Years. THE OLDEST DAILY NEWSPAPER IN THE WAIKATO. THE LARGEST CIRCULATION OF ANY DAILY PAPER SOUTH OF AUCKLAND. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1906. THE BEAUTIFYING OF HAMILTON

Visitors to Hamilton are invariably impressed by the great natural beauty of the town, aud surprise is often felt that more has not been done by the citizens to set off its attractions to better advantage. Few towns iu New Zealand are so generously endowed by nature as Hamilton is, and if nature were judiciously assisted, Hamilton would in a few years be noted from end to end of the colony as an ideal place of residence for the retired, and a pleasant holiday resort. In many cities aud towns beautifying associations have been formed to undertake this special branch of municipal improvement, and out of much less promising material than Hamilton offers, they have fashioned pleasant gardens and resting places. There is a vast field for the activity of such an association here. What limitations could be placed on the potentialities of the river frontages in the hands of skilled enthusiasts? It happens fortunately, that the grounds surroundiug nearly all the public buildings slope back to the river, and they would all no doubt be available for beautifying purposes. There are endless possibilities too, in the Lake reserve, under existing conditions as pleasant a place for an afternoon's ramble as could well be couceived, Iu its river and its lake, Hamilton possesses great natural assets, and a systematic effort to enhance their beauty would meet with warm support. The Borough Council, judging from its action last week regarding the hoardings disfigure the railway reserve, appears anxious to jealously protect the beauties of the town, and the subject might be referred to a committee of that body, to bring down a comprehensive improvement scheme.
