GREAT FIRE IN BRISBANE.
(by bluctuic tblkguaph.—copyright.) Brisbane, September 18. An extensive fire occurred to-day in Eaglestreet, in which damage to the extent of £300,000 was caused. The fire broke out in a large warehouse, occupied by D. L. Brown and Co., wholesale importers, etc., and spread rapidly to the adjacent premises occupied by Barker and Co., general merchants. Both buildings were completely gutted, but owing to the exertions of the brigade the fire was stopped from spreading further. Brown and Co. had their stock and building well covered, their insurances amounting to £101,000. The risks are distributed through nearly all the offices. September 19. Messrs Brown and Co. are insured in the following New Zealand offices : Standard, £2,500, South British and National, £2,500. Messrs Barker and Co.'s stock was insured in the New Zealand Company for £3,000. The barque Wave Queen and ship Cormorant which were lying at the adjacent wharf were injured but not, seriously by the fire.
