REWI AND THE SURVEYS.

Our Kihikihi correspondent writes : — I had an interview with Rewi to-day (Thursday). He said l)is reason for withdrawing his name from the application for survey, and turning over to Tawhiao, was not to stop or interfere with the survey in any way. He emphatically denies any intention on the part of the natives to use any violence to the surveyors, but by his turning to Tawhiao he prevented quarrelling, and perhaps bloodshed amongst the natives themselves, and by his influence he may ultimately succeed in gaining over the king and his party to his views. As regards Taiwhanga and Mcßeth, so far from their arguments influencing him in any way he snubbed them, and when they had spoken told them they might return homo .".gain, and that they need not take any credit for moving him, that he did so for the reasons above stated. He said if any .serious opposition to the survey had been intended it would not now be proceeding quietly as it is, the trig, stations are still standing where erected, and he desires to see the work go on until completed. Of all those who signed the application he is the only one who asked to have his name withdrawn. He stands, he says, between the two races, and if he exhibits too great a partiality for the pakehas it may offend the natives and thus interfere with the opening of the country. He declared he is still, and has always been, loyal to the Queen and Government. Referring to the contemplated trip to England, as far as he was concerned he had not, nor ever had any intention of going, but he was reticent as to the advisability of Tawhiao going.— Tupotahi, who was present, said he wished the survey to go on, and to see the land brought before the court and leased. He deprecated selling any of it, at any rate in large blocks. He Raid, " Why should we kill the cow that gives us milk ; rather let us keep her alive that she may continue to give milk to us and to our children when we are gone." The allusion is plain enough and needs no explanation. I give these statements as Rewi made them, and do not vouch for their sincereity. I told him I wanted the information for publication, at which he seemed pleased, and said he wished everyone to know the reason of his apparent desertion of the Government. — (Otvn Correspondent.)
